When something unexpected, frightening or shocking happens, the effects can sometimes linger, making it difficult to enjoy our lives and feel comfortable with the people around us. In the past few years, many new techniques and methods have evolved which are very effective in resolving trauma.
Anxiety is actually a fight or flight response that protects us and helps us react quickly to threats. Without it, none of us would survive for very long. When your fight or flight response is activated frequently and intensely, however, it can change your perception of the world around you and lead to avoidance of situations that you might otherwise enjoy. Examples include social gatherings, shopping in stores, traveling by air or car, meeting new people, and many other activities and situations. Anxiety can be related to traumatic experiences or may seem to be "out of nowhere." It can feel limiting, out of control, and overwhelming. Techniques such as mindfulness, somatic work, and cognitive behavior therapy can help you regain your sense of comfort, confidence, and freedom.
Seeking help is a big step. It's important to feel comfortable with your therapist and his or her style of therapy. Please read the information on this website and feel free to ask any questions you may have about my professional experience, expertise, or approaches to therapy.
Grief and loss are experienced by everyone at some point in their lives. Grief is not limited to loss of a loved one by death. People often feel grief after a divorce or estrangement from family members, with major health issues or new physical limitations, experiencing the changes of ageing, anticipated the loss of someone with terminal illness, miscarriage, loss of a pet, retirement, and many other circumstances.
Grief can feel unbearable and overwhelming, especially when intensified by trauma or held secretly due to shame or lack of support and acceptance. The experience of grief can also feel very lonely. Therapy can help by normalizing your feelings and experiences, offering coping strategies, and providing non-judgmental support as you learn about and explore your new normal after a loss.
